Where to stay in Sighetu Marmației and Maramureș

The town centre, Săpânța, the traditional villages of the Iza and Mara valleys, or a working farmstead guesthouse: four places to sleep in northern Maramureș, with the upsides, the trade-offs and what to ask before you book.

Where to stay in Sighetu Marmației and Maramureș

In northern Maramureș, where you sleep changes more than your comfort: it changes what you see when you open the door in the morning. Sighet gives you a town, museums and restaurants within a few steps; the villages give you wooden gates, roosters and silence. Here are four options and who each one suits.

Sighetu Marmației town centre

The most practical base, especially on a first visit and especially without a car. The centre is compact, and the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance and the Ethnographic Museum of Maramureș are both walkable, as is the Reformed Church. The Maramureș Village Museum is a short climb at the edge of town.

  • Who it suits: first-time visitors, travellers without a car, anyone coming for the memorial.
  • Upside: restaurants, shops, pharmacies and transport close at hand; easy departures for Săpânța and the valleys.
  • Downside: it is a town, not a landscape. If you came for the Maramureș of the photographs, it begins a few kilometres from here.
  • Good to know: the offer is that of a small town — modest hotels, urban guesthouses, serviced apartments. Do not look for luxury; look for cleanliness, quiet and parking.

One tip: staying near Grădina Morii park gives you a good walk at the end of the day, which matters after a morning at the memorial. And if you have come for the memorial, a room a few minutes away means you can go in when it opens and retreat afterwards without a long drive.

Săpânța

Less than half an hour to the west, Săpânța is the only village in the area with enough places to stay to work as a base in its own right. It holds the Merry Cemetery and Peri Monastery, with one of the tallest wooden churches in the world.

  • Who it suits: those who want a village without isolation; families; travellers with a car.
  • Upside: in the early morning the cemetery is almost empty — a real privilege compared with the midday coaches.
  • Downside: dining options are limited and close early. Ask your host in advance whether dinner is served.

The traditional villages of the Iza and Mara valleys

This is where Maramureș actually lives. The villages along the Iza and the Mara keep working farmsteads, massive wooden gates and tall churches with sharp spires, and village life is not staged for guests. Accommodation is in small guesthouses, often in houses built in the local style, with exposed timber and woven blankets on the beds.

  • Who it suits: those who come for the atmosphere, photographers, travellers staying three nights or more.
  • Upside: misty mornings over the valley, breakfast with homemade cheese and jam, a short drive to the wooden churches of neighbouring villages.
  • Downside: you need a car. The roads are short but winding and the evenings are dark — do not underestimate driving times on unfamiliar lanes.
  • Good to know: one village on the Iza is not interchangeable with another. Some have a wooden church and working craftspeople, others only quiet and orchards. Ask your host what lies a few kilometres around before booking three nights.

Choose according to what you are after: churches and crafts, or simply a valley without noise. The Mara Valley is closer to Sighet and easier for out-and-back drives; the Iza Valley runs deeper into the region and rewards longer stays.

Farmstead guesthouses

The most personal option: a real working household, with a courtyard, animals, an orchard and a family who takes you into their home. It is not a hotel and should not be judged as one — the rhythm is set by your host, not by a reception desk.

  • Who it suits: travellers curious about local life, couples, guests who want to eat what is cooked in the house.
  • Upside: the best food in the region is made here rather than in restaurants, and the conversation at the table is worth more than any museum.
  • Downside: comfort varies. Ask explicitly about a private bathroom, heating, phone signal and internet if you need them.
  • Good to know: meals are arranged in advance and dinner is served at the household's hour. Mention allergies or dietary needs when you book.

If you have never stayed on a working farm, a few expectations are worth adjusting. The morning starts earlier than you would like, because there is work in the yard. The rooms are clean but plain, and timber and woven blankets stand in for design. In exchange you get access to something that cannot be bought: how life is actually lived here, from how the cheese is made to why the gate is carved the way it is.

Seasonality: when it fills up and when it empties

Northern Maramureș has none of the pressure of the coast, but it does have clear peaks. In summer and around the major holidays, the good guesthouses in the better-known villages fill weeks ahead, especially at weekends. Late spring and autumn are ideal: reasonable availability, the landscape at its best, hosts who are less rushed.

  • Peak: the summer holidays and the winter feasts. Book early and confirm meals.
  • Best value: May to June and September to October.
  • Winter outside the holidays: complete quiet, but some village guesthouses close or operate only on request. Confirm in advance rather than assuming.

Choosing, in short

  • Two nights, no car: central Sighet. Town, memorial, museums, all on foot.
  • Two or three nights, with a car, first visit: one night in Sighet, one in Săpânța.
  • Three nights or more: one night in town for the memorial and museums, the rest in a village on the Iza or the Mara.
  • Travelling as an extended family or with older children: a farmstead guesthouse, where the courtyard becomes part of the holiday.

Booking: what to ask first

  • Parking — in the villages the courtyard is usually enough, but in the town centre it is not guaranteed.
  • Dinner — in the villages, do not assume a restaurant will be open in the evening.
  • Access — some farmsteads sit on narrow lanes; ask whether the approach suits your car.
  • Payment — cash remains useful in the smaller villages.

If you are entering the region from the south, a night on the way works well: see the guide to Baia Mare for the city and the airport. For the rest of the plan, see the complete guide to Sighetu Marmației and the list of sights in what to see.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Sighetu Marmației or in a village nearby?+

The town is more practical: the museums and the memorial are walkable, and meals and transport are at hand. The villages of the Iza and Mara valleys give you the experience people come to Maramureș for, but they require a car. On a three-night stay, combining the two works best.

Is it worth sleeping at Săpânța?+

Yes, if you want to see the Merry Cemetery in the morning before the organised groups — the difference in atmosphere is considerable. Săpânța has enough guesthouses to work as a base, but dining options are few and close early, so arrange dinner with your host.

What is a farmstead guesthouse, and what should you ask before booking?+

It is a real working household, with a courtyard, animals and a family hosting you, not a small hotel. Ask about a private bathroom, heating, phone signal and internet if you need them, about driving access on the lane, and about meals — dinner is only cooked if arranged in advance.
