Where to Stay in Cluj-Napoca: the Best Areas

Cluj-Napoca is Transylvania's most dynamic city — a university capital with a medieval square, terraces buzzing late into the night and a fast-growing tech scene. Where you stay shapes the whole trip: you can sleep steps from a Gothic square or in a green, quiet neighbourhood a few minutes' walk away. Here are the areas that matter and who each one suits.

The centre (around Piața Unirii & Piața Muzeului)

The historic heart of the city and, for most visitors, the obvious choice. Piața Unirii, dominated by the Gothic St Michael's Church, and the small Piața Muzeului — the oldest part of town — hold the finest buildings, museums and terraces.

• Everything is on foot: cafés, restaurants and nightlife sit steps from one another.
• The best area for a first visit — you are right in the middle of everything worth seeing.
• Options run from boutique hotels in period buildings to modern serviced apartments.
• The one trade-off: weekend evenings around Piața Muzeului can get lively and loud.

Around the University & Central Park

Just west of the centre, towards Babeș-Bolyai University and Central Park (Parcul Central), the mood turns younger and greener without losing quick access to the squares.

Grigorescu & the quieter residential west

Beyond Central Park, along the Someș river, Grigorescu and the residential west offer calm and greenery.

• Quiet, tree-lined streets — perfect for a longer or family stay.
• Close to the riverbank and open space, good for a morning run or walk.
• A genuine neighbourhood feel, with local markets and cafés you miss in the tourist core.
• You will want transport for nights out in the centre, but you gain sleep and space.

Near the airport & for festivals

Avram Iancu International Airport sits east of the city, a short ride from the centre — handy for an early flight or an overnight layover, but not an area you would base a sightseeing trip in.

Cluj is a festival city on a grand scale: Untold and Electric Castle (the latter held at the Bánffy estate in Bonțida, outside the city) fill the whole place. During these weeks:

• Accommodation sells out months ahead and prices climb sharply — reserve early.
• Check the distance and transport to the festival site before you book.
• For Electric Castle, many choose the official camping or a base out towards Bonțida.

• First visit: the centre, around Piața Unirii and Piața Muzeului.
• Nightlife: the centre again — you are in the thick of the terraces and clubs.
• Business: Mărăști and the east, near the offices and good value.
• Families & long stays: Grigorescu and the quiet west.
