Biserica Reformată din Sighetu Marmației

The Reformed Church of Sighetu Marmației is one of the historic monuments of this town in northern Maramureș, set close to the border with Ukraine, on the banks of the Tisza. Raised by the Calvinist Reformed community, present in the town for centuries, the church bears the imprint of Transylvanian sacred architecture, with an austere interior characteristic of the Reformed rite and a tower that belongs to the skyline of the historic centre. Sighetu Marmației is a town of rich multicultural history, in which Romanian, Hungarian, Jewish, German and Ukrainian communities lived together across the ages, leaving behind a diverse heritage of places of worship.

The town is also known for the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance, arranged in the former political prison, and for its proximity to the Merry Cemetery of Săpânța. The Reformed Church completes this picture, offering visitors testimony to the confessional diversity of historic Maramureș and to the continuity of Reformed communal life in this corner of the country.
