MonasteryPeri Săpânța Monastery is known for its wooden church, considered one of the tallest wooden churches in the world, a remarkable spiritual and architectural landmark set near the village of Săpânța in northern Maramureș, close to the border with Ukraine. Raised at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the church continues the centuries-old tradition of the Maramureș wooden churches, with its extremely tall, sharp spire, which reaches over seventy metres and dominates the whole valley. The settlement evokes the old Peri Monastery, an important medieval monastic and cultural centre of northern Maramureș, today on Ukrainian territory, where some of the oldest religious texts in the Slavonic language of the region are said to have been printed. The modern construction blends the mastery of traditional carpentry with the ambition of an impressive silhouette. Set not far from the famous Merry Cemetery of Săpânța, the monastery forms part of a tourist and spiritual circuit of the area. Visitors are asked to respect the sacred character of the place, proper dress and the quiet of a monastic settlement.
MuseumThe Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance, set in the former prison of Sighetu Marmației, is one of Romania's most important and most moving museums. In the 1950s the building held the country's political, cultural and religious elite — former ministers, academicians, bishops — many of whom died here in inhuman conditions. Today each cell houses a themed exhibition on repression, collectivisation, deportations, anti-communist resistance and everyday life under dictatorship. In the courtyard, a sculptural group and the ‘Space of Reflection' complete the route. Founded by the writer Ana Blandiana and Romulus Rusan, the memorial serves as both museum and research centre on communism. The visit is dense and emotional, recommended to anyone wishing to understand Romania's recent history. Allow at least two hours and check the schedule, which may be shorter off-season.
MuseumThe Maramureș Village Museum in Sighetu Marmației is an open-air ethnographic museum that recreates the authentic world of the traditional village of Maramureș, one of the best-preserved regions of rural civilisation in Europe. Laid out on Dobăieș Hill at the edge of the town, the museum brings together peasant homesteads, wooden houses with tall shingled roofs, carved gates typical of the area, wooden churches, workshops and folk technical installations such as mills and fulling mills, brought from different villages of historical Maramureș and carefully reassembled. Visitors can discover the characteristic architecture of wood, the mastery of local carpenters and carvers, traditional interiors with furniture and textiles, and the organisation of household life in former times. The natural setting, with hills and orchards, completes the atmosphere of a living village. The museum often hosts events devoted to local customs and crafts. As an open-air museum, the visit involves a walk among the exhibits. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable footwear and to check the schedule, which depends on the season.
