Muzeul Etnografic al Maramureșului

The Ethnographic Museum of Maramureș in Sighetu Marmației preserves and showcases the rich traditional culture of this region in northern Romania, famous for its villages with carved wooden houses and gates. The collections include folk costumes, textiles, pottery, peasant tools, household objects and pieces of religious art that illustrate the occupations, beliefs and celebrations of the people living along the Tisa and the Iza, Mara and Vișeu valleys. The display follows the cycle of life and labour, from livestock raising and wool processing to the customs surrounding birth, weddings and funerals.

Attached to the museum is an open-air section where traditional houses and structures have been relocated, offering the image of an authentic Maramureș village. Practical note: the visit combines naturally with a tour of the surrounding villages and the wooden churches listed as World Heritage, and the open-air section is easier to explore in dry weather.
