Zărnești
The Piatra Craiului range and the bear sanctuary.
Zărnești is a small mountain town in Brașov County, set at the foot of the Piatra Craiului massif, one of the most spectacular limestone ridges in the Carpathians. Modest in size, Zărnești has nonetheless become one of Romania's best-loved bases for hiking and nature tourism, thanks to its privileged position between mountains and wild valleys.
The main draw is the entrance to Piatra Craiului National Park, with the famous Zărnești gorge (Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor), a narrow canyon through which a path winds in the shade of towering rock walls. From here trails lead up to the Piatra Craiului ridge, prized by climbers for its wild vertical drops. Nearby stands Curmătura Chalet, a landmark for hikers, as well as reserves that shelter bears, wolves and lynx — which is why the area hosts important large-carnivore conservation projects.
The atmosphere is authentically rural and alpine, with family-run guesthouses, clean air and quiet. Local gastronomy relies on sheepfold products — cheeses, whey cheese, brined telemea — along with stews and homemade spirits. The area is also ideal for horse riding, mountain biking and wildlife watching.
Practically, Zărnești lies just a few dozen kilometres from Brașov and Bran, reachable by car and train, and can easily be combined with a visit to Bran Castle. It is worth choosing for its spectacular nature, its hiking, and its direct contact with the wilderness of the Carpathians.
