Where to stay in Târgu Jiu and Gorj
The centre for walking the Brâncuși route, the park district for quiet, the guesthouses towards Tismana and Hobița for the real Gorj, and the mountain bases at Rânca. The lodging areas, with the advantages and trade-offs of each.

Târgu Jiu is a small city, and that simplifies the decision considerably: almost any central stay lets you walk the entire Brâncuși route. The real difference appears once you add Gorj county to the plan, because then you are choosing between town, valley and mountain. Below are the areas, with the advantages and the trade-offs of each.
How to choose
The question is not which hotel, but how many nights you stay and how much you intend to drive.
- One night, the Brâncuși ensemble only: stay in the centre. You need nothing else.
- Two nights, city plus Hobița and Tismana: the centre is still the best base, with half-day trips out.
- Three nights or more, with the mountains: split the stay, part in the city, part in a guesthouse down a valley or up at Rânca.
- With children or heavy luggage: look for a place with its own parking and close to a park, since the centre is covered on foot.
For what each base puts within reach, see What to see in Târgu Jiu and Gorj.
The city centre
The simplest choice and, for most visitors, the right one.
- Everything on foot: the market square, the restaurants, the county museum and the entrance to the Central Park are all minutes apart.
- The best access in the evening and early morning, which are precisely the hours worth seeing the ensemble in.
- Real urban life: cafés, terraces, shops. This is not a sealed tourist quarter but the centre of a county town.
- Trade-off: street noise on the main arteries and harder parking on weekdays.
Types of stay: city hotels, serviced apartments, small urban guesthouses.
Near Calea Eroilor and the parks
The area between the Central Park and the park of the Endless Column is the quietest option that still keeps you in the city.
- You step straight onto the monument's axis: in the morning you reach the Table of Silence before anyone else.
- More greenery, less traffic, residential streets.
- Good for a run or an evening walk.
- Trade-off: fewer restaurants within a few steps than in the centre, so a slightly longer walk to dinner.
Types of stay: residential apartments, small guesthouses, studios let by the night.
Guesthouses towards Tismana and Hobița
If you want the emphasis on Gorj rather than on the city, the western side, towards Peștișani, Hobița and Tismana Monastery, is the most beautiful.
- Village and agritourism guesthouses, with a courtyard, an orchard and breakfast cooked in the house.
- You are minutes from the memorial house and the Tismana valley, so mornings are not spent on the road.
- Complete quiet in the evening and the cleanest skies in the area.
- Trade-off: you need a car for everything, dinner included, and the city is a 20 to 40 minute drive back.
Types of stay: agritourism guesthouses, guest houses, valley chalets.
Mountain bases at Rânca
For those coming for the mountains too, not only for Brâncuși, staying high up changes the character of the trip entirely.
- Rânca is the high-altitude resort on the Transalpina road, the classic base for the Parâng range: hiking in summer, snow in winter.
- Mountain chalets and guesthouses, many with their own restaurant, precisely because there is little else around.
- Mornings with views across the ridges and quick access to the trails.
- Trade-off: altitude comes with weather. The alpine roads are seasonal, and in winter you may need good tyres and patience. From Rânca, the city is no longer a short hop.
A middle option: a guesthouse on the valley towards the Sohodol Gorges, close to nature but at a reasonable distance from Târgu Jiu.
The types of stay you will find
Gorj has no international chain hotels and no large resorts, and that is more an advantage than a gap.
- City hotels, in Târgu Jiu, practical and well placed, suited to a night or two.
- Serviced apartments, the best solution for families or longer stays, usually with a kitchen.
- Agritourism guesthouses, in the villages between the city, Peștișani and Tismana, where home cooking is the main reason to stay.
- Mountain chalets and guesthouses, at Rânca and on the valleys towards the ridge, built for walkers and for the snow season.
- Whole houses to rent, increasingly common along the valleys and good for groups.
Seasons and booking
- Spring and autumn are the quietest and cheapest periods in the city, and the county landscape is at its best.
- Summer raises demand on the valleys and in the mountains rather than in town, so book the guesthouses towards Tismana and the chalets at Rânca ahead.
- In winter the city stays relaxed, but Rânca comes into weekend season, with high occupancy on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Long weekends and holidays fill the village guesthouses first. If your dates are fixed, secure them a few weeks in advance.
- Local events can fill the city on specific dates; if your schedule is tight, confirm availability directly with the host.
The ideal split by nights
- 2 nights: both in the centre.
- 3 nights: two in the centre, one in a guesthouse towards Tismana.
- 4 nights or more: two in the city, two up in the mountains.
That split also gives you the two faces of the county: the city with its modernist monument, and the Gorj of valleys and ridges.
What to check before booking
- Parking, especially in the centre. Ask explicitly whether it is in a courtyard or on the street.
- The real walking distance to the Central Park, not just the distance in a straight line.
- Breakfast, particularly at village guesthouses, where it is usually the strongest point.
- Winter access, for mountain and valley stays.
- Heating and air conditioning: foothill winters are cold, and Oltenian summers can be very hot.
