Where to stay in Sovata: the best areas
Sovata-Băi beside Lacul Ursu, the town centre, the guesthouses on the road towards Praid and Corund, or a base for the whole Székely Land. Four areas, four different logics — and which one fits the trip you have in mind.

In Sovata, choosing an area is not a matter of taste but of purpose. The resort splits clearly between the balneal part beside the lakes and the town proper, and the difference between them completely changes how you spend your days. Below are the four accommodation logics in the area — no hotel names, just areas and consequences.
Sovata-Băi, beside Lacul Ursu
This is the heart of the resort. The Băile Sovata area is the cluster of treatment hotels, villas and guesthouses set right on the paths between the lakes, a few minutes' walk from Lacul Ursu and Lacul Negru.
Who it suits: anyone coming for balneal treatment, for the lakes, or for quiet. If the point of the trip is salt water and mud, there is no reason to stay anywhere else — the procedures happen here, and the walk to the treatment base should not be a daily expedition.
Upsides:
- Everything on foot. The lakes, the forest paths, the treatment bases.
- The highest concentration of properties with their own spa, pools and procedures included or available on site.
- Genuine quiet, with beech and fir woods instead of traffic.
- The atmosphere of a resort from another era, with old villas and pavilions.
Downsides:
- The most expensive segment in the area, especially in season.
- It fills first, well in advance, during treatment periods and holidays.
- Few places to eat outside the hotels; evenings are very quiet.
- Some properties are older buildings, renovated unevenly — read recent reviews, not just the description.
Practical tip: if you are coming for procedures, ask explicitly, before booking, whether the property has its own treatment base or sends you to another one, and how the appointment with the balneology doctor works.
The town centre
A short distance from the balneal part lies everyday Sovata: shops, pharmacies, banks, a market, a few restaurants and patisseries. Accommodation here is plainer, but also more practical.
Who it suits: visitors with a car, families who cook for themselves, people who want to see the region rather than spend all day on a lounger.
Upsides:
- Better value for money than the balneal zone.
- Services at hand: groceries, pharmacy, restaurants open in the evening.
- A good starting point for Praid, Corund and the surrounding villages.
- More availability at peak season, when Sovata-Băi is full.
Downsides:
- The forest and the lakes are not at your door — it is a walk or a short drive.
- The feel is small-town rather than resort.
- Fewer properties with their own spa.
Guesthouses towards Praid and Corund
On the road climbing east out of Sovata, through the villages towards Praid and Corund, a third type of accommodation appears: guesthouses and family-run rooms, many of them in working households, with a yard, a garden and homemade breakfast.
Who it suits: couples and families with a car, people who prefer the village to the town, visitors drawn to Salina Praid, the Salt Mountain and the pottery workshops of Corund.
Upsides:
- The best prices in the area and the most room for your money.
- Home cooking and hosts who tell you where to go.
- You are close to the salt mine — useful above all if you are going there for the therapeutic effect, several days running.
- Village quiet and hill scenery, with orchards and hay meadows.
Downsides:
- A car is essential. Public transport will not help you on these routes.
- You are far from the treatment bases in Sovata-Băi.
- Facilities vary a great deal from one household to the next.
- In the villages towards Praid and Corund Hungarian is the majority language; communication works, but with patience.
Sovata as a base for the Székely Land
The fourth option is not an area but a strategy: you book several nights in Sovata and use the resort as a base camp for the surrounding corner of the Székely Land — villages of brightly painted houses, the region's arranged bathing spots, the hills towards Harghita, the fortified churches on the road to Sighișoara.
It works surprisingly well, for two reasons: Sovata has more accommodation than the villages around it, and it sits right on the main road crossing the region, so you can set out and come back easily in any direction.
How to do it properly:
- Pick a property with its own parking and, if you can, breakfast included — you will be leaving early.
- Book several nights in the same place. The distances are short; there is no sense in moving luggage.
- The balneal zone for comfort, the villages for budget — both work as a base.
- Leave one day entirely free for the resort itself, at the end. After three days of driving, the salt lakes taste completely different.
When accommodation fills up
Sovata has two peaks: summer, for the lakes and holidays, and the balneal treatment periods, which stretch well beyond summer. Long weekends and school holidays fill the balneal zone first.
The simple rule: for summer and for treatment, book early and ask for written confirmation of the procedures. For autumn, winter and early spring you can choose almost anywhere — and prices drop noticeably.
In short
- You want treatment and lakes at your door → Sovata-Băi.
- You want fair prices and services at hand → the town centre.
- You want quiet, home cooking and the salt mine nearby → guesthouses towards Praid and Corund.
- You want to explore the whole region → any of them, but with a car and several nights in one place.
