Lacul Negru Sovata

Black Lake in Sovata is one of the salt lakes of this famous resort in Mureș County, formed on a salt massif lying close to the surface. Like the celebrated Bear Lake nearby, Black Lake was born through the dissolving of salt by rainwater and springs, a process that gave rise to a cluster of lakes with curative properties. Its name comes from the dark hue of the water and of the sapropelic mud gathered on the bottom, used in spa treatments.

Heliothermy, the phenomenon by which layers of water heat differently owing to differences in salinity, is characteristic of these lakes and adds to their therapeutic value. Surrounded by forest and set along an easily accessible walking route from the resort centre, the lake completes the balneary landscape of Sovata. For visitors coming for treatment or relaxation, it is a quiet stop, away from the bustle of the Bear Lake beaches, yet just as representative of the salt riches of these hills.
