Complete guide to Giurgiu

Giurgiu is a town you pass through. For most people it is the point where you cross the Danube into Bulgaria, not where you spend a weekend — and that's fair enough. The real reason to come to this county lies 30 kilometres from Bucharest, in a forest with a marsh: Comana Natural Park.

Giurgiu, briefly and honestly

Giurgiu is a Danube port town, the seat of Giurgiu county, and the main crossing point to Ruse in Bulgaria over the Friendship Bridge. That defines its life: transit traffic, the port, customs, the link with the Bulgarian city on the far bank.

For a visitor, the town offers a walk rather than a programme:

  • The Clock Tower, the town's landmark, standing in the centre — the symbol every local recognises.
  • The central area and the port — a few period buildings, the square, the Danube bank with its view over the river and towards Ruse.
  • The Danube itself — the reason the town exists, and the best thing about it.

It has no extensive historic centre, no major museums and no food scene worth driving for. A stop of a few hours is enough, and its best moment comes in the evening, on the riverbank, watching barge traffic and the lights on the far shore.

If you have half a day and want to use it well, head to the port and then out along the embankment: the Danube at Giurgiu is wide, with islands and low banks, and its scale surprises anyone seeing it for the first time.

A bonus for those with time: Ruse, on the Bulgarian bank, is a visibly richer town architecturally, with 19th-century buildings and a pleasant centre. If you cross the bridge, have your documents in order and check the formalities beforehand.

Comana Natural Park — the real reason

Comana Natural Park is one of the most accessible nature destinations in southern Romania: a wetland and forest area roughly 30 kilometres from Bucharest, within Giurgiu county.

What you find there:

  • Comana marsh, a broad wetland on the Neajlov river, with reed beds, channels and pools — a very good place for birdwatching, especially during migration.
  • Comana forest, a remnant of lowland woodland with clearings and rare plant species, among them the protected Romanian peony, which flowers in spring.
  • Easy trails, suitable for families, for cycling and for a day of walking with no mountain ambitions.

A few common-sense rules, valid at any time:

  • Stay on marked trails and tracks — wetlands are fragile and, in places, deceptive underfoot.
  • Don't pick protected plants. The peony is for photographing, not for taking.
  • For birds, come early in the morning, with binoculars, and stay discreet.
  • Bring water, a hat and insect protection — this is lowland country, hot in summer and mosquito-heavy near the marsh.

The area works best as a day trip: leave Bucharest in the morning, spend a few hours in the park and return in the evening, perhaps with a stop in Giurgiu if you want to see the Danube.

Organising the visit

Three scenarios that make sense:

  1. Comana only. The best effort-to-reward ratio. A day of nature close to the capital, with a short drive.
  2. Comana plus Giurgiu. Morning in the park, afternoon at the Danube, in the port and at the Clock Tower.
  3. Crossing into Bulgaria. Giurgiu as the crossing point, with a break in town and, if you have time, a few hours in Ruse.

A car makes everything much simpler, both for the park and for the villages around it. Giurgiu has road and rail links to Bucharest, but inside the park public transport won't help you.

When to go

For Comana, the season changes a lot of what you see:

  • Spring is the best window: the forest is green and fresh, the peony flowers, and bird migration passes over the marsh. It is also the most comfortable time for walking.
  • Autumn brings birds on passage again, colour in the woods and pleasant temperatures, with fewer visitors.
  • Summer is hot, dry in the forest and mosquito-heavy by the water. It works early in the morning or towards evening.
  • Winter leaves a bare but peaceful landscape; trails can be muddy or frozen.

In Giurgiu, by contrast, the season hardly matters — the town reads the same in an hour, in any month. The one real difference is the Danube bank, far more pleasant in good weather.

What not to expect

  • Giurgiu is not a city-break destination. Don't try to fill a whole day with it.
  • Comana is not a reserve with dense tourist infrastructure. Come prepared, with water and suitable footwear.
  • The Danube here is not the Delta. It is a wide river, a port and traffic — handsome in its own way, but a different thing.

Judged properly, the two complement each other: a port town that shows you the Danube in a few hours and, an hour away, one of the best nature escapes Bucharest has.
