Vatra Dornei
A mountain resort of mineral waters and skiing.
Vatra Dornei is a spa and climatic resort in Bucovina, in Suceava County, set at altitude in the Dorna basin, at the confluence of the Dorna and Bistrița Aurie rivers, ringed by the Călimani, Suhard, Giumalău and Bârgău massifs. Known for its clean air, its carbonated mineral springs and the peat mud used in its treatments, the town built its reputation back in the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when it became an elegant resort; from that period date the Casino, an imposing eclectic-style palace now restored, and numerous treatment villas. Vatra Dornei is an all-season destination: in winter the ski area on Dealul Negru, served by a chairlift, draws skiers; in summer the trails toward the Călimani Mountains and the Swiss-pine reserve, along with the famous "Twelve Apostles," bizarre rock formations, call to hikers.
The resort's park, with squirrels and springs, adds to the charm. The atmosphere is calm, that of a high-altitude resort with a belle époque air. Bucovinian cooking offers sour soups, stews, mountain cheeses, blueberry liqueur and homemade spirits.
Vatra Dornei is reached by the DN17 road and the railway that crosses the Eastern Carpathians. It is worth visiting for its mineral waters, its historic spa architecture and its mountain scenery of restorative beauty.
