Turda

The spectacular salt mine and the wild gorges.

Turda is a town in central Transylvania, in Cluj County, set on the valley of the Arieș River, with a history reaching back to Roman times, when it was called Potaissa and housed an important legion. Its present fame, however, rests on the Turda Salt Mine, an old salt works turned into a spectacular underground park: more than a hundred metres down, in vast galleries dug over the centuries, there is a lake with rowing boats, a Ferris wheel, sports courts and an amphitheatre, all in a futuristic setting of cool blue that has become one of the most photographed attractions in Romania. On the town's edge, the Turda Gorge, a wild limestone defile carved by the Hășdate stream, offers hiking and climbing routes among imposing walls and a rare flora.

Turda also preserves medieval Gothic churches and buildings that recall its past as a mining town and a seat of the Transylvanian diets. The atmosphere is that of a provincial town revived by tourism. Transylvanian cooking offers goulash, sour soups, pork dishes and traditional desserts.

Turda lies close to Cluj-Napoca, on the A3 motorway and the national roads. It is worth visiting for its unique salt mine, its gorge and its Roman and medieval heritage.

Peștera Huda lui Papară

Huda lui Papară Cave, set in the limestone massif at the edge of the Trascău Mountains, in Alba County, is one of the most spectacular and most difficult caves in Romania, famed for its underground waterfalls and for the country's largest bat colony. An active watercourse flows through its galleries, and the visiting route, full of thresholds, waterfalls and narrow flooded passages, demands caving gear and an authorised guide, being reserved for the well prepared. The cave's legendary name recalls a shepherd, Papară, lost here with his flock. The impressive bat colony, strictly protected, makes the cave a nature reserve of great biological value. The scree, the damp and the absolute darkness make exploration an intense experience, only for lovers of adventure. Practical note: never enter unaccompanied; turn to an authorised caving club, since the cave is dangerous and access is regulated to protect the bats.

Parcul Central Turda

The Central Park of Turda, in Cluj County, is the town's oldest and best-loved green retreat, a public garden laid out as far back as the 19th century, when Turda prospered on salt and administration. Alleys shaded by centuries-old trees, chestnuts and limes, wind around broad resting spaces with benches, flower beds and fountains that enliven the scorching summers of the Transylvanian Plain.
