Galați
The Danube waterfront and gateway to the northern Delta.
Galați is the largest Danube port town, in southern Moldavia, near the river's confluence with the Siret and Prut, in an area where three countries meet. An important industrial and naval centre, it hosts one of Romania's largest steelworks and shipyards, but its charm is best revealed on the Danube embankment, a long, lively promenade from which to watch the broad river and the passing vessels. The Public Garden, the Museum of Visual Art and the natural-science museum complex, with its botanical garden and aquarium, round out the cultural offering.
Nearby lies Lake Brateș, the largest natural lake in the region, a paradise for birds and anglers, along with the reserves of the Prut floodplain. The atmosphere is that of a dynamic river town, with a cosmopolitan port air and a diverse community. Danube and Moldavian cooking offers fresh fish, borscht soups, sarmale and savoury pies, washed down with wines from the surrounding vineyards.
Galați is reached by roads and railways from Bucharest, Brăila and Moldavia, and a ferry crosses the Danube toward Dobruja. It is worth visiting for its impressive embankment, its position at the crossroads of three countries and its closeness to the nature reserves of the Lower Danube.

WineryCrama Gârboiu
Crama Gârboiu lies in the heart of Vrancea, at Tănăsoaia, in Romania's largest wine basin. The Gârboiu family works both rare native grapes — Băbească Neagră, Galbenă de Odobești, Șarba — and international ones, in ranges that brought the Vrancea region new prestige: Bacanta, Epicentrum, Livia. The wines are expressive, with generous fruit and an increasingly clear maker's signature, steadily awarded in recent years. The area, marked by Vrancea's famous seismic epicentre, has even made that a brand theme. The estate welcomes visitors for tastings and tours, offering a modern face to a region known mostly for volume. It's a discovery for anyone who wants to taste winegrowing Moldavia beyond the clichés.
