Bușteni

Below the Caraiman, in the heart of the Bucegi.

Bușteni is a mountain resort in the Prahova Valley, set at the foot of the Bucegi massif at an altitude of roughly 880 metres. The town stretches along the Prahova River, overshadowed by the sheer walls of the Caraiman and Coștila peaks, and crowned by the Caraiman Heroes' Cross, the highest monument of its kind in the world, raised in the 1920s in memory of the soldiers who fell in the First World War. A cable car in the centre climbs to the Bucegi plateau, where trails lead to Babele and the Sphinx, wind-carved rock formations that have become emblems of the Romanian mountains.

In town, Cantacuzino Castle, a neo-Romanian residence from the early twentieth century, shows off its terraces, arcades and gardens looking out toward the ridgeline. The mood here is bracing and restorative, all clean air and alpine quiet, suited equally to summer hiking and winter sports. Local cooking leans on hearty mountain fare: tochitură stew, shepherd's bulz, sharp sour soups and wild-berry preserves, often served in guesthouses with carved wooden verandas.

Bușteni is easily reached by train or along the DN1 road from Bucharest and Brașov, and its central position makes it an ideal base for exploring the whole Prahova Valley. It is worth visiting for its rare blend of dramatic scenery, heritage and accessibility.

Crucea CaraimanLandmark

Crucea Caraiman

The Caraiman Cross, also known as the Heroes' Cross on Caraiman Peak, is an imposing monument built in the 1920s on a ridge in the Bucegi massif, at high altitude, in memory of the soldiers who fell in the First World War. With its metal structure tens of metres tall, set on a massive concrete base, the cross is visible from a great distance and, being lit at night, can be seen from Busteni and across the whole Prahova Valley. It has been recognised as the tallest cross in the world placed on a mountain peak. Its construction at such an altitude, in harsh conditions, was a genuine engineering feat of the era. The site offers a dizzying panorama over the mountains and the valley below. Practical note: it is reached by cable car from Busteni to the Bucegi plateau and then along a marked trail, or by a more demanding hike; proper mountain gear is needed even in summer.

Cascada TaminaNature

Cascada Tamina

The Tamina Waterfall, near the resort of Busteni at the foot of the Bucegi massif, is a picturesque cascade hidden among rock walls and lush vegetation. Waters rising in the mountain tumble over steps of rock in a cool, shaded setting, appreciated above all on hot summer days. The access route starts from the Busteni area and follows a marked path through the forest, offering views along the way towards the slopes of the Bucegi. The waterfall is an accessible attraction, suited to short family hikes but also a starting point for longer mountain routes. The natural setting, with the murmur of water and clean air, turns the place into a relaxing stop. Proper footwear for the mountain path is recommended, along with care on the wet and slippery stretches near the falls.

Castelul Cantacuzino BușteniCastle

Castelul Cantacuzino Bușteni

Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni, built in 1911 for Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino — nicknamed "the Nabob" — is an architectural jewel in the Neo-Romanian style, perched on a slope with sweeping views toward the Caraiman Mountains and the Prahova Valley. Stone façades, arcades, fountains and a terraced garden make it one of the most elegant manors in Romania. The interiors preserve heraldic coats of arms, stained glass and panelling, evoking the splendour of a boyar family with Byzantine roots. In recent years the castle has also become famous thanks to international film productions shot here. Visitors can walk the halls and the romantic park and admire the mountain panorama from the terraces. It is a natural stop on the route to Sinaia and Bran. Vulcanii Noroioși Berca (Pâclele Mari)Nature

Vulcanii Noroioși Berca (Pâclele Mari)

The Mud Volcanoes at Berca, best known through the Pâclele Mari area in Buzău county, form one of the most unusual landscapes in Romania, often compared to the surface of another planet. The phenomenon occurs when gases from deep within the earth push mud and water to the surface, forming small volcanic cones that bubble slowly and let the mud flow down their slopes. The result is an almost vegetation-free terrain, grey and cracked, dotted with miniature craters that make the place utterly distinctive. The area is designated a nature reserve for its geological uniqueness and for a few rare plant species adapted to the salty soil. Visitors walk carefully among the cones, fascinated by the ceaseless spectacle of the moving mud. The landscape becomes especially photogenic at sunrise and sunset, when the light brings out the textures of the ground. Located a few kilometres off the main road, the Mud Volcanoes are an unusual and memorable destination for those exploring the sub-Carpathian region of Buzău.
