Valea Vaserului

The Vaser Valley in the Maramureș Mountains is one of the most spectacular wild valleys in Romania, famous the world over for the steam train that runs through it. The Vaser River, a mountain tributary of the Vișeu, has over millennia carved a deep gorge through the coniferous and beech forests, in a territory largely without roads. Here runs the celebrated Vaser Valley steam train, a forestry train with a steam locomotive, one of the last in Europe still operating on a narrow gauge, once used to haul timber and today a renowned tourist attraction.
The journey along the forestry railway, departing from Vișeu de Sus, reveals landscapes of rare beauty: waterfalls, mineral springs, cliffs and untouched forests, part of a protected area. The valley is a habitat for bears, deer and other wild animals. For visitors seeking the authentic nature of Maramureș, the steam-train ride through the Vaser Valley remains an unforgettable experience.
