Munții Maramureșului

The Maramureș Mountains form the northernmost massif of the Eastern Carpathians on Romanian territory, stretching along the border with Ukraine near the town of Vișeu de Sus. It is a wild and sparsely populated region, protected within a large nature park, remarkable for its old beech and conifer forests, alpine meadows, mineral springs and diverse wildlife, which includes bears, wolves, lynx and many bird species. Gentle ridges and deep valleys are crossed by swift rivers, and the landscape keeps an authentic character marked by traditional homesteads and pastoral life.
The area is also known for the famous Mocănița steam train of the Vaser Valley, a forestry railway that climbs a spectacular valley in the heart of the mountains, offering one of the most picturesque travel experiences in Romania. The mountains draw hikers, nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. Visitors are advised to prepare for variable mountain conditions and to respect the rules of the protected area.
