Mocănița CFF Vișeu (Vaser)

The Vaser Valley steam train, setting out from Vișeu de Sus in Maramureș, is one of Romania's best-loved tourist experiences and Europe's last forestry steam railway still hauling timber, not just passengers. The narrow-gauge line climbs dozens of kilometres through a wild, narrow valley inaccessible by car, along the Vaser river, through coniferous forests, past mineral springs and waterfalls, in a landscape untouched for nearly two centuries. The steam locomotive, the smoke, the whistle and the slow rhythm of the little train make the journey a step back in time, delightful especially for children and technology enthusiasts.
The trip lasts several hours, with stops along the way, and is spectacular in any season, but above all in autumn. Booking tickets ahead is essential in season, and the schedule depends on the time of year — check it before setting off.
