Where to stay in Reșița and the Banat mountains
Central Reșița for services and easy roads, Văliug and Crivaia for the lakes, Semenic for the mountains, or guesthouses at the edge of the Nera gorges for dawn starts: how to choose the right base in the Banat mountains for what you came to see.

In the Banat mountains, where you sleep changes the shape of the whole trip. Stay in Reșița and you get a town, services and good roads; stay by a lake or at the edge of the park and you gain traffic-free mornings and quick access to the trails. The four areas below cover almost every sensible option.
How to decide
The question is not which area is best, but how much time you want to spend driving and how early you want to be on the path into the gorges. Three simple criteria settle nearly everything:
- What you will see most — museums and the town, or the national park and the lakes.
- How much you will drive each day — distances here run on county and gravel forest roads, so they are slower than they look.
- What kind of evening you want — restaurants and shops, or total quiet and a sky full of stars.
Central Reșița
The most practical option for a short stay or a first visit. The town has services, shops, fuel and restaurants, and every road in the region starts here — towards Văliug and Semenic in one direction, towards Anina and the national park in the other.
Who it suits: visitors without a car or with a mixed programme (museums plus one day in nature), families who want logistical comfort, anyone arriving late in the evening.
- Walking distance to the Steam Locomotive Museum and the valley walk.
- The best place to stock up before your days in the park.
- The shortest link to Timișoara and Lugoj.
The downside: you do not wake up in nature, and the town is industrial rather than picturesque. If you came for forest and water, part of each morning goes to the car.
Văliug and Crivaia, on the lakeshore
Less than half an hour from town, the lake district is the classic holiday choice. Lake Gozna has the small resort of Crivaia right on its shore, with blue-green water between wooded hills and a good supply of guesthouses, chalets and rental houses.
Who it suits: couples, families with small children, weekend breaks where unwinding matters more than ticking off sights.
- Lakeside walks straight from your door, no car needed.
- A convenient starting point for Semenic, on the same road.
- The best balance of quiet and services anywhere in the region.
The downside: summer weekends and school holidays fill the area, so book ahead. The national park is still a serious drive away, so plan early departures.
Semenic, up on the plateau
The Semenic mountain resort sits on the high plateau above Reșița, and sleeping here means real mountains: cold air, pasture, dwarf pine and wide views. In winter it is the natural choice for snow; in summer it becomes a base for walks across the plateau.
Who it suits: hikers, winter sports enthusiasts, anyone who wants to wake up already on the mountain.
- Immediate access to the trails and the plateau, with no long morning drive.
- Cold, quiet nights even in the middle of August.
- The best option for anyone combining the Banat with other mountain regions; for trails and mountain conditions, munte.online is the place to look.
The downside: services are limited and you depend on a winding road. In winter, check road conditions and come properly equipped.
Guesthouses towards the Nera gorges
On the roads running down towards the south of the county, in the villages at the edge of Cheile Nerei–Beușnița National Park, accommodation is simpler, more rural and far closer to the park entrances. This is the choice for those who came above all for Cheile Nerei–Beușnița, for Ochiul Beiului and for Beușnița Waterfall.
Who it suits: hikers, photographers, anyone who wants to be on the trail at first light, visitors who also fit Bigăr Waterfall into the itinerary.
- The shortest drive to the park entrances and the best departure times.
- Local hosts, home-cooked meals, the atmosphere of a Banat village.
- Few people outside peak weekends.
The downside: fewer options, rougher access roads and modest services. Book directly and ask explicitly about driving access and meals.
For total quiet: the Buhui and Anina area
If you want forest and nothing else, the area towards Anina and Lake Buhui offers isolated places to stay among the beech trees, with more demanding access and very few other visitors. It is not a first-visit choice, but it is a very good second one.
You come here for mornings with mist between the trees and evenings when nothing at all can be heard. In exchange you give up restaurants, shops and sometimes tarmac — so leave Reșița or Anina stocked up and with a full tank.
What to ask when you book
Accommodation in the Banat mountains is mostly guesthouses, chalets and rental houses rather than large hotels, and two places with identical descriptions can differ enormously. Ask directly, before you pay:
- Whether meals are cooked on site and at what times they are served.
- What the last few kilometres of road are like and whether an ordinary car can make it.
- Whether there is heating for cold nights, including outside winter at altitude.
- How long the drive to the park entrances really takes, by the host's estimate rather than the map's.
- Whether there is parking and, if it matters, whether pets are welcome.
Practical advice
- Book ahead for summer weekends, public holidays and the snow season at Semenic.
- Ask about access for rural guesthouses — some roads call for a car with decent ground clearance.
- Ask about meals, especially in isolated areas where no restaurant will be open in the evening.
- Pick one base for three nights; moving between areas eats exactly the time you would otherwise lose on forest roads anyway.
- Plan your park day before booking: if it is the main event, sleep as close to it as you can.
