Romania's 10 Best Castles and Fortresses

From Peleș and Corvin to Alba Carolina and Râșnov — the country's most spectacular castles and fortresses, in one guide.

Redacția România Mea· 10 min read

Romania has a remarkable density of castles and fortresses, the legacy of a history at the crossroads of empires. Here are ten of the most impressive, from royal palaces to medieval strongholds.

1. Peleș Castle (Sinaia)

The summer residence of Romania's kings, Peleș is a 19th-century Neo-Renaissance masterpiece, with sumptuous interiors and one of the country's finest collections of art and armour.

2. Corvin Castle (Hunedoara)

Romania's most spectacular Gothic castle — bridges, towers and a fairy-tale silhouette, tied to the Corvin family.

3. Bran Castle (Bran)

The country's most-visited monument, marketed as "Dracula's Castle". The link to Bram Stoker's novel is thin, but the castle is genuine and beautifully set.

4. Alba Carolina Citadel (Alba Iulia)

Romania's largest Vauban-style bastion fortress, superbly restored, with monumental gates.

5. Râșnov Fortress

A hilltop peasant citadel, a refuge for the community in times of siege, with wide views over the Bârsa Land.

6. Sighișoara Citadel

The only continuously inhabited medieval citadel in Europe on the UNESCO list, with its emblematic Clock Tower.

7. Poenari Citadel

The true fortress of Vlad the Impaler, perched on a ridge near the Transfăgărășan; reached by climbing hundreds of steps.

8. Cantacuzino Castle (Bușteni)

An early-20th-century palace, with terraces and gardens facing the Bucegi mountains, familiar from films and series.

9. Rupea Citadel

An imposing fortress on a basalt hill between Brașov and Sighișoara, handsomely restored.

10. Făgăraș Fortress

One of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the country, with a water moat, in the centre of Făgăraș.

Tips

  • Check the opening hours of each site on the day; they change by season.
  • Peleș and Bran are very crowded in summer — go early in the morning.
  • Many fortresses require a walk uphill (Poenari, Râșnov) — wear comfortable shoes.
  • They combine into routes: Peleș + Cantacuzino on the Prahova Valley; Corvin + Alba Carolina in the west; Râșnov + Bran + Sighișoara in central Transylvania.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most beautiful castle in Romania?+

Opinions vary, but Peleș Castle in Sinaia and Corvin Castle in Hunedoara are most often cited — one for its royal interiors, the other for its Gothic silhouette.

Is Bran really Dracula's castle?+

Not really. The link to Bram Stoker's character is thin and largely commercial. Poenari Citadel is the fortress historically associated with Vlad the Impaler.

Can you visit several castles in one day?+

Yes, depending on the area. On the Prahova Valley you can combine Peleș and Cantacuzino; in central Transylvania, Bran, Râșnov and Rupea are close together.
