Gura Humorului

The ideal base for the painted monasteries.

Gura Humorului is a small town in Bucovina, in Suceava County, set at the confluence of the Humor and Moldova rivers in a landscape of wooded hills that marks the start of the mountain zone. Modest in size though it is, the town is one of the main gateways to the painted monasteries of Bucovina, masterpieces of medieval Romanian art inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Just a few kilometres away stands Voroneț Monastery, dubbed the "Sistine Chapel of the East" for its exterior frescoes of an unmistakable blue, dominated by the spectacular scene of the Last Judgement; not far off, Humor Monastery shows off its frescoes in warm tones of red.

The town has a well-developed tourist infrastructure, with guesthouses, a ski area on Șoimul hill and an adventure park. The atmosphere is quiet and welcoming, an ideal base for exploring historic Bucovina. Bucovinian cooking is rich and traditional: sour soups, stews, sarmale, savoury pies and smoked-meat dishes, alongside pálinka and homemade spirits.

Gura Humorului is reached by the DN17 road and the railway from Suceava and Cluj. It is worth visiting for access to the UNESCO painted monasteries, for the Bucovinian landscape and for the living traditions of this region.

Biserica de lemn Voroneț

The wooden church of Voroneț, near Gura Humorului, is a small traditional shrine in Bucovina that shares its name with the famous nearby monastery but represents another facet of local spirituality: the village's wooden architecture. Built in the Bucovina carpentry tradition, with skilfully joined beams, a tall shingle roof and a slender spire, the church bears the mark of the faith of the community that raised it. Around it, the hilly landscape of Bucovina, with meadows, forests and farmsteads, completes the atmosphere of reflection. A visit connects naturally with the great Voroneț Monastery, famous for the "Voroneț blue" and its exterior frescoes inscribed on the UNESCO heritage list, just steps away. It is a quiet, authentic stop, away from the crowds. Modest dress and respect for the place of worship are advised; check the local visiting schedule.
