Turnul Scărilor Sibiu

The Stairs Tower of Sibiu is one of the oldest elements of the town's medieval fortifications, marking the passage between the Upper Town and the Lower Town, the two levels that define the urban structure of the old Saxon burgh of Transylvania. The tower shelters a vaulted passage through which the Stairs Passage descends, a covered stone staircase that links the two areas of the citadel and offers one of the most picturesque views of Sibiu. The construction dates from the medieval period and formed part of the town's defensive system, one of the best preserved in the country.

The thick walls, the arches and the steps worn by the passing of centuries create a distinctive atmosphere, evoking the life of the citadel of old. From here open views over the rooftops and the old houses with dormers, the famous windows that seem to gaze upon the street. The Stairs Tower is a landmark on the tourist routes of the historic centre and a favourite spot for photographers.
