Turnul Negru Brașov

The Black Tower in Brașov is one of the defensive towers that formed part of the city's old medieval fortification system, built on a rock to the west of the historic centre. Its name comes from the blackened appearance it acquired after a fire caused by a lightning strike in the 16th century. Restored in modern times and topped with a glass structure, the tower today preserves its distinctive silhouette and offers, from its platform, one of the finest views over old Brașov, with its red rooftops, the Black Church and Mount Tâmpa in the background.

The way up follows a short path, but the panoramic reward is worth the effort. Together with the nearby White Tower, it recalls the times when Brașov was a prosperous fortress-city defended by walls, bastions and guild towers. The Black Tower is an ideal stop for those exploring the historic centre of Brașov who want a panoramic perspective over the city.
