Sinagoga din Cetate

The Fortress Synagogue is one of the most important places of worship of the Jewish community in Timișoara, a multicultural city in Banat where over the centuries Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, Serbs and Jews lived side by side. Raised in the second half of the nineteenth century in the historic Fortress district, the synagogue impresses through its sumptuous architecture, which blends Moorish, Romantic and eclectic elements, with a dome and richly decorated facades that reflect the prosperity and refinement of the community of that era. The spacious interior, with galleries and polychrome decoration, evokes the brilliance of Jewish religious life in old Timișoara.
Although the community shrank considerably following the events of the twentieth century, the building has been restored and today hosts cultural events, concerts and exhibitions, becoming once more a living space of the city. The synagogue is among the landmark monuments of the Timișoara historic centre and bears witness to the rich multi-ethnic and spiritual heritage of this western Romanian city.
