Piața Victoriei Timișoara

Victory Square in Timișoara is the symbolic heart of the city and the stage of the December 1989 Revolution, which began right here. Also called "Opera Square," it is a broad pedestrian boulevard lined with elegant Secession and eclectic buildings, linking the Romanian National Opera to the imposing Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral with its multicoloured spires. Between them stretch green strips, fountains, terraces and the statue of the She-Wolf, a replica of the Roman one, marking the city's Latin roots.
Timișoara — the first city in Europe with electric street lighting and a supremely multicultural city — displays here its architecture restored under the European Capital of Culture programme. The square is the city's meeting place, lively day and night. It is freely accessible on foot; check the schedule of Opera performances and cathedral services.
