Muzeul Național Brukenthal

The Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu is the oldest museum in Romania and one of the oldest in Europe, opened to the public in the early 19th century. It originates in the rich art collection of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, governor of Transylvania, who gathered European paintings of great value, displayed in his Baroque palace on the Grand Square. The European art gallery includes works from the Flemish, Dutch, Italian, German and Austrian schools, among them famous names of the old masters.

Besides the painting gallery, the museum comprises collections of decorative art, a valuable library and other sections housed in buildings in the city centre. The Brukenthal Palace, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, is itself an attraction, with its elegant facade and decorated salons.
