Muzeul de Istorie Casa Altemberger

The History Museum of Sibiu is housed in the Altemberger House, a remarkable Gothic architectural ensemble, considered one of the oldest civil buildings in the city. The edifice, raised in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, bears the name of the mayor Thomas Altemberger and impresses with its residential tower, inner courtyard and well-preserved architectural details. The museum presents the history of Sibiu and Transylvania through collections of archaeology, medieval pieces, weapons, guild objects and documents that illustrate the development of the Saxon town.
Visitors move through themed halls that recreate successive eras, from prehistory to the modern period. The building itself is an exhibit, through its value as a monument. Set in the historic centre of Sibiu, the museum fits naturally into a sightseeing route; checking the schedule and any temporary exhibitions is recommended.
