Muzeul Chihlimbarului Colți

The Amber Museum in the village of Colți, in Buzău County, is the only museum in Romania dedicated to amber and tells the story of a rare resource worked in this sub-Carpathian area. Buzău amber, also known as rumanite, is a distinct variety of fossilised resin, prized for its varied colours, from yellow and red to dark, almost black shades. The museum presents the history of mining this stone around the villages of Colți and Sibiciu, where locals gathered and worked amber over generations. The collection includes rough lumps, polished pieces, jewellery, and tools, along with explanations of the geological formation of the resin millions of years ago.
Set in a traditional house, the museum also evokes mountain village life. Visitors discover a lesser-known page of Romania's natural riches. It is worth combining the visit with exploring the picturesque area around it.
