Mănăstirea Galata Iași

Galata Monastery in Iași, raised on a hill overlooking the old capital of Moldavia, was founded at the end of the 16th century by Prince Peter the Lame, and is one of the most important fortified monasteries around the city. The church, dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord, is a remarkable example of Moldavian architecture from the transitional age, blending the local tradition with Wallachian influences, among them the presence of a tower over the narthex, a novelty for the Moldavia of that time. The ensemble was surrounded by defensive walls and a bell tower, serving also as a fortified princely residence.
From the Galata hill, the view over the city of Iași, with the towers of its churches and its historic buildings, is especially beautiful. The monastery today preserves the contemplative atmosphere of an ancient establishment. Practical note: combine the visit with the discovery of Iași's other great monasteries and churches, among them Three Hierarchs and the Metropolitan Cathedral.
