Cetățuia Cluj

Cetățuia is the hill that dominates central Cluj from the right bank of the Someș and the city's most popular viewpoint. On its summit stood a star-shaped Austrian fortress, built in the 18th century to watch over and control the city, of which a few walls and buildings survive. Today, though, people climb here mainly for the view: from the top you can see the whole of Cluj, with its church towers, the roofs of the old centre and the surrounding hills, a superb panorama especially at sunset and at night, when the city lights up. The climb takes a few minutes by stairs or paths, and at the top there are terraces and a hotel.

It is the locals' favourite spot for an evening stroll and the tourists' for photographs. It combines easily with a visit to the Old Town at the foot of the hill. Choose a clear evening for the finest image of the city.
