Biserica Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil

The Church of Saints Michael and Gabriel in Brăila is a monument with a distinctive history, tied to the Ottoman past of this Danube port town. The building was originally a mosque raised during the period when Brăila was under Ottoman rule, serving as a Muslim place of worship. After the town's liberation and its return to Wallachia in the nineteenth century, the building was converted into an Orthodox church and consecrated to Saints Michael and Gabriel, becoming a symbol of the historical changes the town underwent.
Its architecture preserves traces of its origin, blending elements of the old construction with additions and decoration characteristic of Orthodox worship. The church stands in the historic centre of Brăila, a town with a remarkable fan-shaped urban layout and a rich multicultural heritage. The building is an important landmark of the local heritage and a testimony to the layers of history that overlapped in this town on the bank of the Danube, a meeting point of several cultures and faiths.
