Biserica Sfântul Nicolae Domnesc

St Nicholas the Princely Church is the oldest place of worship in Iași, founded at the end of the 15th century by the prince Stephen the Great. For centuries it served as the coronation church of the rulers of Moldavia, with the investiture ceremony held beneath its vaults. The building underwent many alterations over time, and at the end of the 19th century it was radically restored according to the plans of the French architect André Lecomte du Noüy, who gave it its present appearance, inspired by the medieval Moldavian tradition. Its slender silhouette, with elegant towers and glazed-brick decoration, stands out in the city's landscape.

Inside, mural painting and liturgical objects recall its princely role. Located in the centre of Iași, the church is an essential landmark for anyone interested in the history of Moldavia. Practical note: visitors are asked to respect the quiet and the dress appropriate to an active place of worship, especially during services.
