Where to Stay in Suceava and Bukovina

Bukovina is a place you travel slowly, along hill roads that link painted monasteries to villages where time moves differently. And the first decision you make — perhaps the most important — is not which monastery to see first, but where to sleep. The real choice comes down to two worlds: the city of Suceava, with its hotels, restaurants and urban comforts, or a village set right beside the monasteries, where you wake to the smell of woodsmoke and warm sweet bread. Both are right — it depends on the kind of trip you want.

Suceava city — the practical base

Suceava is the historic capital of northern Moldavia and the logical arrival point: it has a train station, an airport, hospitals, pharmacies, ATMs and the densest choice of hotels in the region. If you land late, leave early, or simply want a predictable room with a 24-hour front desk and breakfast served, the city is the safe choice.

  • The Princely Citadel (Cetatea de Scaun) looms over the town — one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the country, a short walk from the centre.
  • Restaurants, cafés, a shopping mall and late-opening services — handy after a long journey or before departure.
  • A great arrival and departure base, but the painted monasteries are a 30–60 minute drive away, so you will spend time on the road each day.

Suceava is ideal for the first and last night. For the monasteries themselves, many travellers then move closer.

Gura Humorului — the best-placed small town for the monasteries

If you had to choose a single spot for touring the painted monasteries, Gura Humorului is the answer. It is a welcoming mountain town right in the heart of Bukovina: Voroneț, the "Sistine Chapel of the East", is minutes away, and Humor monastery sits on the very edge of town.

  • Dozens of guesthouses and small hotels, from simple to elegant, plus restaurants and a cable car up Șoimului Hill.
  • Short distances to almost every UNESCO monastery — you can see Voroneț, Humor and Moldovița in one relaxed day.
  • A station on the main line, so it is reachable without a car, though a car opens up far more.

It is the best compromise between comfort and proximity. See also our painted monasteries guide for a day-by-day route.

Vatra Moldoviței and Sucevița — sleeping right by the monastery

For the deepest immersion, sleep in the monastery village itself. Vatra Moldoviței and Sucevița are deeply rural settlements where your guesthouse is often a few hundred metres from the painted walls. Early in the morning, before the tour coaches arrive, you can have the monastery almost to yourself.

  • An authentic atmosphere: farmsteads with animals, hay meadows, wooden churches, complete silence at night.
  • Sucevița, with its green frescoes and fortress walls, is one of the most impressive monasteries of all — waking up beside it is something else entirely.
  • The choice of rooms is smaller and simpler than in the towns, so booking ahead matters, especially in summer and around Easter.

Choose this area if you want stillness, stars and the feeling of having stepped truly inside Bukovina.

Câmpulung Moldovenesc and Vatra Dornei — for pairing Bukovina with the mountains

If you want to combine the frescoes with hiking and mountain air, move southwest. Câmpulung Moldovenesc is a traditional mountain town and a good base for the Rarău massif and the Pietrele Doamnei crags. Vatra Dornei is a classic spa resort with a park, mineral springs and a ski slope in winter.

  • Ideal for longer stays that blend culture with nature — monasteries by day, mountain trails the next.
  • Resort hotels, guesthouses and spas, plus a rail line running toward Transylvania.
  • A little farther from the key monasteries, but the scenery along the way is a reward in itself.

This area is for those who want not just monasteries but the whole mountain side of Bukovina.

Village guesthouses (pensiuni) — the heart of Bukovinian hospitality

Whichever area you choose, consider a family-run guesthouse (pensiune). This is where Bukovina truly reveals itself: hosts who receive you like a cherished guest, breakfasts of fresh eggs, homemade cheese, preserves and bread baked in a hearth oven.

  • Home cooking: sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls), tochitură, mountain trout, cozonac — many guesthouses cook on request, using produce from their own farm.
  • Painted-egg workshops, pottery or weaving, offered by host artisans — a living link to the region's traditions.
  • Fair prices and a warm, personal welcome that no hotel can match.

Guesthouses are the soul of the region. If you take one piece of advice from this guide, let it be this: spend at least one night in a pensiune.

Best for — a quick guide

  • Easy monastery-hopping → Gura Humorului, central and well connected.
  • Authenticity and quiet → Vatra Moldoviței, Sucevița or a village guesthouse.
  • Comfort and services → the city of Suceava, especially on arrival and departure.
  • Mountains plus culture → Câmpulung Moldovenesc or Vatra Dornei.

Booking tips: rural guesthouses have few rooms and fill up fast in summer and around Orthodox Easter — reserve a few weeks ahead. A car multiplies your options and lets you reach the monasteries at first light. For the bigger picture, read our Suceava and Bukovina travel guide as well.
