Mehedinți County

Seat: Drobeta-Turnu Severin

A county in the southwest, where the Danube carves its way through the mountains at the Iron Gates, in one of Europe's most spectacular river landscapes. Mehedinti is the land of the Danube Cauldrons, the narrow gorge where cliffs plunge into the water, and of Decebalus carved into the rock, the tallest stone sculpture in Europe.

Here survive the ruins of Trajan's bridge, while at Ponoarele karst has shaped natural bridges, caves and a lake. The county seat, Drobeta-Turnu Severin, a Danube port town, blends its Roman ruins with elegant boulevards and sweeping views of the river.
