Ștei

A base town for the Apuseni, near the Bears' Cave and the Bihor gorges.

Ștei is a small town in Bihor county, nestled at the edge of the Apuseni Mountains, where the plain gives way to hills and forests. Unlike the old market towns around it, the town was built up in the communist era around uranium mining, and its architecture still bears the mark of those years. Today Ștei is a quiet, practical gateway into the heart of the mountains.

From here run the roads to some of the finest places in the Apuseni. Nearby stand the hilltop Finiș citadel, the spectacular Galbena Gorge and the famous Bears' Cave, with its limestone formations and cave-bear skeletons. For hikers and nature lovers, the town is a convenient starting point for oak woods, gorges and caves.
