Satu Mare
A north-western town with the Firemen's Tower and a Central European heritage.
Satu Mare is a border town in north-west Romania, in the Maramureș region, with a clear Central European heritage. At its heart, Liberty Square gathers Secession and Baroque buildings, while the tall, slender Firemen's Tower watches over the town and offers wide views across the rooftops. The Roman-Catholic cathedral completes the skyline of a neat and charming centre.
Set close to the borders with Hungary and Ukraine, the town is a meeting point of cultures and a convenient stop for travellers. From here opens the road to the Oaș land, with its traditional villages, folk costume and living customs, as well as to the thermal baths nearby. Satu Mare is a gentle gateway to the authentic north of the country.
