Salonta

A Bihor plains town, with the Cionka Tower and the memory of the poet Arany János.

Set on the western plains near the Hungarian border, Salonta is a restful town in Bihor county, with a Central European air and a settled sense of history. Above its rooftops watches the Cionka Tower, the sole surviving bastion of the old medieval fortress, a reminder of the days when the town guarded the frontier of the plain. Its wide streets and low buildings give it the calm rhythm of a provincial market town.

Salonta is, above all, the town of the poet Arany János, one of the great figures of Hungarian literature, born here. His memorial house keeps the writer's memory alive and draws visitors from both countries. For the traveller descending from the Apuseni towards the plain, the town offers a quiet stop where layers of history and culture intertwine.
