Mamaia

The most popular resort on the coast.

Mamaia is the best-known resort on Romania's Black Sea coast, a narrow strip of fine sand stretched between the sea and Lake Siutghiol, just north of Constanța. Its wide, golden-sand beach ranks among the most admired on the Romanian coast, and the shallow, gentle water makes it well suited to families. The resort built its identity as a summer holiday destination: hotels lined along the shore, beach clubs, terrace restaurants and a lively nightlife that peaks in the summer months.

A gondola lift running the length of the resort gives a panoramic view over sea and lake, while an amusement park and the Aqua Magic water park round out the leisure offering. Lake Siutghiol, to the west, is a ground for watersports and boat trips out to Ovidiu Island. The atmosphere is cosmopolitan, loud and festive in season, quieter off-season.

The food revolves around fish and seafood — mussels, brine-poached fish (saramură) and Dobrujan dishes — washed down with wines from the Murfatlar vineyards. Mamaia is easily reached from Constanța, only a few kilometres away, by road and public transport. It is worth visiting for its beaches, its summer buzz and its convenient access to Constanța's ancient heritage.

The Mamaia Casino is a historic landmark of the best-known resort on the Romanian coast, a building with an aristocratic air raised in the interwar period, when Mamaia was becoming the holiday retreat of the elite. Set close to the beach, the edifice evokes the resort's golden age, with terraces opening to the sea and an elegant architecture that contrasts pleasantly with the modern hotels around it. Over the decades the building has hosted society events, restaurants and leisure spaces, remaining a symbol of summer nostalgia. Today the area is enlivened by the seaside promenade, with terraces, cafés and views of the waves. Mamaia, with its wide beach of fine sand and vibrant nightlife, is Romania's summer destination par excellence. It is a pleasant sight to admire on strolls along the seafront. Telegondola Mamaia

The cable car in Mamaia is one of the emblematic attractions of the best-known resort on the Romanian coast, offering an unusual perspective over the resort and the Black Sea. The installation carries visitors in suspended cabins along the resort, at height, opening broad views over the vast beaches, the hotels, Lake Siutghiol and the blue expanse of the sea. The ride offers a relaxing and spectacular experience, especially at sunset, when the sun colours the sky above the coast. The cable car has become a symbol of modern Mamaia, a pleasant way to admire the resort from above and to travel between its different areas. From this height, the contrast between the crowded seaside beaches and the calm waters of Lake Siutghiol creates a memorable landscape. Popular especially in the summer season, the cable car draws families and tourists who want a fun activity and a unique view over the coast. It is an unmissable stop for those visiting Mamaia who wish to discover the resort from a different angle.
