Focșani

The capital of Vrancea, on the old border between Moldavia and Wallachia, at the heart of the vineyards.

Focșani is the capital of Vrancea county, a town raised right on the old border between Moldavia and Wallachia, where a stream once divided two lands. This frontier position gave it a special role in the history of unification, recalled today by Union Square at the town's heart. The cathedral and period buildings lend the centre a solemn, settled air.

The town lies amid the largest vineyards in Romania, with the celebrated vines of Odobești and Panciu, where wine has been made for centuries. Not far off, at Mărășești, the Heroes' Mausoleum keeps the memory of the great battles of the First World War. For the traveller, Focșani blends history, remembrance and the taste of wine in a single Moldavian stop.
