Eforie
The mud baths of Techirghiol.
Eforie is a resort on the Romanian coast of the Black Sea, in Constanța County, made up of two localities — Eforie Nord and Eforie Sud — set on a high cliff between town and sea. It is one of the oldest spa resorts on the coast, renowned since the early 20th century for treatments with sapropelic mud from Lake Techirghiol.
Eforie's defining feature is the combination of long beaches and spa treatment. Lake Techirghiol, a salty lagoon with therapeutic mud rich in minerals, has been used for over a century for rheumatic and dermatological ailments, and its mud baths are among the most sought-after in Romania. The high cliffs, with stairways and lifts down to the beach, give the resort a distinct profile compared with the flatter rest of the coast.
The atmosphere is that of a family resort, lively in summer, with promenades, terraces and beach life. Eforie Nord is closer to the spa treatment, while Eforie Sud has a quieter, more residential air. Nearby lie Constanța, with its port and historic centre, and the Techirghiol nature reserve.
Dobrudja gastronomy offers fresh fish, mackerel, pies and seafood specialities. Practically, Eforie is easily reached by car and train from Constanța, a few kilometres to the south. It is worth visiting for its beaches, for the mud treatments at Techirghiol, and for the classic atmosphere of a Black Sea resort.

ChurchBiserica Rupestră Sfântul Andrei
The Rock Church of St Andrew lies near Eforie, in Dobrogea, and is considered a place linked by tradition to the preaching of Christianity in these lands by the Black Sea. The sanctuary is partly carved into the rock, a modest grotto turned into a place of prayer that preserves an air of simplicity and contemplation. Local tradition connects this place with the Apostle Andrew, regarded as the one who brought the Christian message to the region of ancient Dobrogea, known long ago as Scythia Minor. Over time, the grotto became a pilgrimage destination, and a small monastic complex developed around it. The natural setting, with the vegetation of the Dobrogean plain and the quiet of the place, reinforces the atmosphere of a sanctuary. Practical note: as this is a religious pilgrimage site, decent dress and a respectful attitude are appropriate, and the visit can be combined with the archaeological and spa attractions of the coastal area.
BeachPlaja Eforie Nord
Eforie Nord Beach is one of the most popular and extensive beaches on the Romanian Black Sea coast, set in the Eforie Nord resort south of Constanța. Renowned for its fine sand and the generous width of its shoreline, this destination has been, over the decades, one of the pillars of Romanian summer tourism, drawing families, young people and travellers seeking relaxation alike. The resort is known not only for the beach but also for its proximity to Lake Techirghiol, famous for its therapeutic sapropelic mud and salt water, used in spa treatments for over a century. Along the beach stretch numerous terraces, clubs, leisure areas and facilities for water sports. Its sunny position and easy access make Eforie Nord a classic choice for a seaside holiday. In the summer season the beach can become crowded, especially on weekends. Visitors are advised to be mindful of sun exposure and to stay properly hydrated on the hot days of summer.
ViewpointFaleza Eforie Nord
The seaside promenade of Eforie Nord stretches above the beaches of the Romanian Black Sea coast, offering wide views over the water and a pleasant place to stroll for tourists visiting the resort. Eforie Nord is one of the oldest and best-known resorts on the coast, developed from the start of the twentieth century, valued for its broad fine-sand beaches and for its nearness to Lake Techirghiol, famous for its therapeutic mud. From the promenade one can descend to the beach and admire the sea horizon, especially at sunrise, a moment loved by visitors. The laid-out paths, green spaces, and viewpoints make the promenade a fitting place for walks at any time of day. The area also offers opportunities for relaxation and spa treatment thanks to the natural resources nearby. Visitors can combine a walk along the promenade with a day at the beach. Sun protection is advisable during the warm season.
SpaBăile cu nămol Eforie Nord
The mud baths of Eforie Nord are one of the emblematic spa attractions of the Romanian coast, linked to Lake Techirghiol, a salty lagoon with a high concentration of salts and a sapropelic mud of recognised therapeutic properties. The black mud, rich in mineral and organic substances, has been used for more than a century to treat rheumatic and dermatological conditions and other health problems, applied in the classic cure by smearing it on the body and exposing it to the sun. The traditional ritual involves coating in mud, drying in the sun on the lakeshore, and rinsing in the salt water, an experience enjoyed by generations of visitors. The resort of Eforie Nord combines access to the Black Sea beaches with the spa treatments offered by the mud facilities near the lake. The area suits both relaxation and health cures, and the lagoon landscape contrasts pleasantly with the sea just a few steps away.
