Călărași

A town on the Danube and the Borcea branch, in the Bărăgan plain.

Set on the bank of the Danube and its Borcea branch, Călărași is a town of waters and plain, at the southern edge of the Bărăgan. The river and its arms trace around it a landscape of islands and low banks, where life always seems bound to the rhythm of the great water.

In town, the Saint Nicholas cathedral and the central park offer marks of urban calm, while the Danube's islands remain true havens for birdlife and favoured spots for anglers. Călărași is a stop along the Lower Danube, where the plain meets the river in a play of channels, sandy shores and wooded islands.
