Sala Unirii

The Union Hall in Alba Iulia is one of the most important symbolic places in national history, being the building where, on 1 December 1918, the union of Transylvania with Romania was proclaimed. The building, inside the Alba Carolina citadel, had originally been constructed as a military hall, and on that memorable day it hosted the Great National Assembly, where delegates representing the Romanian communities of Transylvania voted for union. Today the space functions as a commemorative museum, preserving the solemn atmosphere of the moment and displaying documents, photographs and testimonies related to this founding event.
The interior has been arranged to evoke the historical significance of the place, and the visit offers a deep understanding of the formation of the modern Romanian state. Alba Iulia thus became a city that symbolises national unity. Practical note: the visit fits naturally into a tour of the Alba Carolina citadel, and its proximity to the Coronation Cathedral and the other monuments allows a coherent, meaningful historical route.
