Palatul Principilor Alba Iulia

The Palace of the Princes in Alba Iulia is one of the most important historic monuments of the citadel, a building that served as the residence of the princes of Transylvania during the period when Alba Iulia was the capital of the Transylvanian principality, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Here the princes who ruled Transylvania held their court in an era of great political importance, and the palace witnessed landmark historical events, among them the moment in the year 1600 linked to the brief union of the Romanian lands under Michael the Brave. The building, with an architecture that blends medieval and Renaissance elements, underwent numerous transformations over the centuries.

The palace stands in the heart of the imposing Alba Carolina citadel, a Vauban-style fortification with monumental gates, among the best preserved in the country, alongside cathedrals, museums and other monuments. A visit to the palace fits naturally into a tour of the citadel, offering a picture of the central role of Alba Iulia in the history of Transylvania and of the whole country.
