Cetatea Histria

Histria Fortress is the oldest urban settlement on the territory of Romania, founded by Greek colonists in the seventh century before Christ, on the shore of a bay of the Black Sea, today a lagoon, in Constanta county. For more than a thousand years the city was an important port and commercial centre, passing successively under Greek, Roman and Byzantine influence, until its decline in the early Christian centuries. The archaeological site reveals defensive walls, temples, early Christian basilicas, paved streets, baths and dwellings, which sketch the image of a wealthy ancient city.

A museum at the entrance displays objects discovered during the excavations, from ceramics to inscriptions and statues. Set near the Danube Delta, in a landscape of steppe and marsh, the Histria site offers a fascinating journey into the ancient world of Dobrogea, valued by enthusiasts of history and archaeology.
