Spa and Thermal Romania: Wellness Resorts, Hot Springs and Salt Mines

Băile Felix, Herculane, Techirghiol and the salt mines — a centuries-old spa tradition, between thermal waters, mud and salt-mine microclimates.

Redacția România Mea· 9 min read

Romania has one of the richest spa traditions in Europe, with thermal and mineral waters, therapeutic muds and salt mines used for centuries. Wellness travel here means more than a hotel spa — it is a culture of treatment.

Băile Felix

Near Oradea, Băile Felix is Romania's largest spa resort, renowned for its rich thermal waters and for its thermal water lily (a rare plant). It is open year-round and suited to rheumatism cures and relaxation.

Băile Herculane

One of the oldest resorts in Europe, Băile Herculane was known in Roman times for its sulphurous thermal springs. The historic architecture of the centre, though partly decayed, has a distinct charm, and the surrounding Cerna Valley is superb.

Techirghiol

On the shore of the lake of the same name, near the coast, Techirghiol is famous for its sapropelic mud, used in treatments, and for the lake's hypersaline water. It is a classic balneotherapy destination.

The salt mines

The stable microclimate, clean air and lack of allergens make salt mines popular for respiratory conditions (speleotherapy). Turda Salt Mine (spectacular, with a Ferris wheel and an underground lake), Praid Salt Mine, Slănic Prahova Salt Mine and others combine a tourist visit with a therapeutic effect.

Other resorts

  • Sovata — Bear Lake, heliothermal, with salt water.
  • Covasna — the "resort of a thousand springs", with mofettes (carbon-dioxide emanations).
  • Vatra Dornei — carbonated mineral waters and mountain air.

Tips

  • Many resorts operate year-round; winter is quieter.
  • For medical treatment, consult a spa physician on site.
  • Salt mines are cold (around 12–14 °C) — bring warm clothes even in summer.
  • Check opening hours and any online tickets in season.
