Romania in Winter: Skiing, Christmas Markets and Thermal Baths
Slopes at Poiana Brașov and Sinaia, Christmas markets in Sibiu and Cluj, steaming thermal baths — what the cold season looks like in Romania.
Winter turns Romania into a destination of its own: snow-covered mountains, medieval cities under festive lights, and thermal waters you sink into while it's freezing outside. Here's how to make the most of the cold season.
Skiing
Romania isn't the Alps, but it has good slopes for beginners and intermediates, at affordable prices.
- Poiana Brașov — the best-known resort, with varied slopes, ski schools and easy access from Brașov.
- Sinaia — on the Prahova Valley, with a high-altitude domain in the Bucegi mountains.
- Other options: Predeal, Azuga, Straja, Vatra Dornei, and Bâlea (ski touring / freeride for advanced skiers).
Check snow conditions and lift schedules before you go — the season depends on the weather.
Christmas markets
From the second half of November and throughout December, cities fill with lights and the scent of mulled wine.
- Sibiu — one of the finest markets in the country, in the Large Square.
- Cluj-Napoca, Brașov, Craiova, Bucharest — all have popular markets, with ice rinks, craftspeople and seasonal food.
Thermal baths in winter
The contrast between the freezing air and the hot water is one of winter's great pleasures. Băile Felix, Herculane, thermal pools in the west of the country and various thermal water parks operate year-round.
Other winter experiences
- Salt mines (Turda, Praid) — an attraction and microclimate whatever the weather.
- Horse-drawn sleighs in the villages of Bucovina and Maramureș.
- The Vaser Valley steam train, spectacular under snow (check the winter schedule).
Tips
- Mountain roads can be tricky in winter — winter tyres and sometimes chains.
- Book accommodation ahead over Christmas and New Year.
- Dress in layers; mountain temperatures can fall well below freezing.
