Teleorman County

Seat: Alexandria

In the far south of Wallachia, Teleorman spreads across the low Danube plain, threaded by the Vedea and Teleorman rivers that give it its name. This is above all a farming land, with wheat and sunflower fields running to the horizon, yet it holds deep prehistoric roots: Neolithic settlements and archaeological sites tied to the Gumelnita culture have been unearthed here. Turnu Magurele keeps watch over the Danube bank, while the county seat, Alexandria, a town planned in 1834 and named after Prince Alexandru Dimitrie Ghica, offers a calm central square and old churches as a resting point in the heart of the plain.
