Sălaj County
Seat: Zalău
Sălaj is a county of Transylvanian hills, gently rolling, dotted with villages where time seems to have stopped. Here survive some of the loveliest wooden churches in Transylvania, with slender spires and shingles blackened by the years. The Meseș mountains close the western horizon, and at Porolissum stretch the ruins of one of the largest Roman forts in Dacia, a frontier fortress of the empire.
It is a quiet, authentic land, far from crowded circuits. The seat is Zalău, a town at the foot of the Meseș, a historic gateway between Transylvania and the world beyond the mountains.
