Ilfov County

A county wrapped around Bucharest, with woodlands surviving from the old Vlasiei forest, lakes and noble estates north of the capital. Ilfov is the weekend escape of the city: Snagov, with its island monastery and the reputed grave of Vlad the Impaler; Mogosoaia Palace, a jewel of the Brancovenesc style raised by Constantin Brancoveanu; and Caldarusani monastery, sheltered among the waters.

The string of lakes north of Bucharest invites walks, fishing and rest. The county seat, Buftea, is known for its film studios and the lakeside estate nearby.
